In the 1920s, fashion designer Pacita Longos flattened the voluminous sleeves of the camisa or blouse of the terno ensemble. The result was a pair of sleeves resembling a butterfly in flight. Nowadays, any dress with butterfly sleeves is called a terno, but the term also means “matching,” alluding to its different components that match each other.
